Why a travel pillow may be your best ever travel accessory

If you’ve ever spent time travelling on a long haul flight or even a lengthy bus or car trip, you’ll know just how uncomfortable it can be to try and catch some shuteye in an upright or slightly reclined sitting position, after all not all of us can afford to fly in the pointy end of the plane. Whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure, any extra quality sleep you can get on your flight will benefit you immensely that’s why a travel pillow just may become your most essential travel accessory.

So to make your trip more enjoyable and to avoid a sore neck or the embarrassment of nodding off and resting your head on your neighbor as you snooze off a travel neck pillow may be the perfect accessory.  We’ve sourced a few favorites to suit all budgets.

Different Types of Pillows for Travel

    1. Inflatable Travel Pillows

You’re probably most familiar with the traditional compact, u-shaped, blow up plastic pillow with the sort of faux velvety fabric covering it.

These pillows are not the most comfortable but are the cheapest, can be adjusted to your desired firmness, and fold to the smallest size when deflated.

We recommend the “Purefly Soft Velvet Inflatable Travel Neck Pillow” which has a comfortable cover and its very own travel case.

    2.  Memory Foam Travel Pillows

Memory foam was originally designed for the NASA astronauts program.

This specially made foam offers fantastic comfort and support for your neck. Whilst a bit more expensive than other pillows it’s a very worthwhile investment for the long haul flight.

Memory foam will also compress to about a quarter of its normal size so is still small enough to fit into your carry on luggage. We recommend the “Cabeau Evolution Memory Foam Travel Pillow

    3. Neck Support Travel Pillow

Something new in travel pillow is the super soft, very comfortable “Trtl Pillow“.

The Trtl pillow has a unique patented design which lets you wrap it around your neck.  Strengthened by internal ribs encased in hyperallergenic fleece this travel pillow provides support for the neck and chin.  The pillow is also machine washable.

Weighing only 148 grams this lightweight, compact pillow is easy to store.

However whilst this scientific design offers great support for your head while you sleep the downside is that it can be a bit warm as it covers a greater area of your neck than other pillows.

The manufacturer claims that the pillow is scientifically proven to hold the head and neck in a better ergonomic position than a traditional travel pillow.

The pillow has been designed for all different shapes and sizes but is not suitable to children under 14 years old.

The chin supporting travel pillow also ensures that the head does not fall forward during sleeping. It has a flay back which means your head isn’t pushed forward.

Tips for choosing the ultimate travel pillow

    Size Matters

If you like to travel light with minimal luggage then an inflatable pillow may work best for you, but remember a memory can be compacted to about a quarter of its original size so it is also a viable option.

Think about where you will be travelling to, a velour or fleece material will be a luxury in an air conditioned cabin but may be too warm on a bus in the tropics.

    Neck Support

Consider how you will sleep in an upright position and how your head normally rests, as this will give you a good indication to the level of support you need.

Look for a fabric that is not only long lasting, but one where you can remove the cover and was so that your travel pillow is always fresh and comfortable

The cost of a travel pillow can vary greatly, but comfort and good sleep is priceless so make sure you invest wisely! Also make sure you buy before you travel as airport shop prices are generally way higher than what you would pay elsewhere.
